Building a €5 Million Nanofiber Research and Production Center in Romania

M-TEchX EU is bringing Japanese nanofiber technology to Maramureș through a new European center dedicated to research, development and industrial production.

From Japanese technology to European production

M-TEchX EU is developing a modern nanofiber research and production center in the Smart Specialization Park in Șomcuta Mare, Maramureș County. The project brings together technology developed by Japanese inventor Hiroyoshi Sota and the industrial capabilities required to manufacture advanced nanofiber materials within the European Union.

The development was featured by The Romania Journal in March 2025, which reported an estimated investment value of €5 million.

The challenge

Europe uses advanced nanofiber materials across medical, textile, construction, filtration and other industries, but industrial-scale domestic production remains limited. This creates dependence on imported materials, longer delivery times and a more vulnerable supply chain.

M-TEchX EU’s objective is to establish a local platform capable of supporting both commercial production and the continued development of new nanofiber applications.

The project

The new center will combine research laboratories, application development and nanofiber production within one facility. According to The Romania Journal, the planned production capacity is approximately 4,800 kilograms of nonwoven nanofiber membrane per month, equivalent to around 12,000 finished pieces.

The facility is also planned to use photovoltaic panels to supply the energy required for its operations, supporting a more efficient and environmentally responsible production model.

Strategic location

Locating the center in Romania provides direct access to the European single market while benefiting from the infrastructure and incentives available within the Smart Specialization Park.

From Maramureș, M-TEchX EU will be positioned to serve customers throughout Europe with shorter delivery routes, euro-based commercial relationships and a more dependable regional supply chain.

Expected impact

The project is designed to create more than production capacity. It will establish a regional base for advanced-material research, attract specialized professionals and open new opportunities for cooperation with universities, manufacturers and industrial partners.

It also marks an important step toward turning MAGIC FIBER™ from a patented Japanese technology into a scalable European industrial platform.
